Another year of events and challenges, thought-provoking discussion, intellectual stimulation, physical activity and most importantly companionship.
U3A is brought to our members through the generosity of our volunteers who donate their enthusiasm, their time and their knowledge and talent. Our volunteers serve on the management committee, run the office, promote us in the community, organise events, support our technology and conduct discussions and classes. There would be no U3A SOUTHERN GOLD COAST without our volunteers. If you are interested in being involved, you do not need to sign up for a particular role, we welcome volunteers to help with one off events or projects. Any contribution of time, skill and support is welcome and important. We invite you to join U3A SOUTHERN GOLD COAST volunteers. This year we say farewell and thank you to Derek Robertson. Derek is an honorary tutor who has dedicated his extensive research and class time to sharing his vast scientific knowledge with our members. His contribution over the years has been appreciated by the committee and enjoyed by his classes. From the programme manager Meg Johnson and president, Vicki Harvie, thank you Derek, we wish you the best. Each month I will keep you informed of news and forthcoming events by email, the website and Facebook. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy the U3A SOUTHERN GOLD COAST year. We are always interested in feedback from our members so keep in touch. Gold Coast City Council is running a program aimed at improving peoples health. This is especially important as we age, Studies have shown that U3A members have improved mobility, increased physical activity, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases.
Details of the council's program can be found on their website: www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/Things-to-do/Active-Healthy-program In addition to the council's program, there are a number of classes that we offer that will help improve balance, flexibility, and coordination, which can help reduce the risk of falls and improve overall mobility. Check out our classes for 2025. We have just received two pieces of advice on how to spot a scam. At this time of years online activity it higher than normal. To try and help keep you safe here are two links that you can use to read this advice:
Remember: if an offer sounds too good to be true, it could well be a scam. We will hold our enrolment/open days for the 2025 U3A activities on 22 and 24 January.
Come along and take the opportunity to speak with tutors and committee members about our activities for 2025. This year our enrolment days will be held at the Tugan Community Centre, as Boyd Street is being refurbished. Dates and times:
Due to the renovation work at 4 Boyd Street, we will need to close the building before the end of the year. There will be no activities from the afternoon of December 5th through to the week of February 10th, 2025.
All activities at Boyd Street later than December 5th have been cancelled. The Music Concert scheduled for 3:00 pm 6 December will now be held in the Activity Room, Tugun Community Centre. Queensland Seniors Month is celebrated from 1 to 31 October each year.
Seniors Month is about celebrating the valuable contributions that seniors make to our city as well as encouraging community connections and participation. During the month-long celebration there are opportunities for everyone to connect through free or low-cost activities offered across the city. It’s the perfect time to enjoy what the Gold Coast has to offer, meet people and try something new.
